THE GREEN HORNET: RIPPED FROM REAL LIFE?
By Elizabeth McLeod The Green Hornet is celebrating his 75th anniversary this month and is in the news with the release of the upcoming feature film on January 14th. Our own new collection of radio shows, featuring many previously uncirculated shows, is expected to be available for shipment around the same time. In the liner notes for this set, radio historian Elizabeth McLeod references a possible real life inspiration – reporter Jerry Buckley -- behind the Hornet's creation in 1936. We asked Elizabeth to expand a little on that topic, and we present it to you here.

Unprecedented corruption was the rule in many of America's cities as the 20's turned into 30's. Bootlegging, grafting, gambling, and every other form of vice combined to make city life a trial for honest, hard-working people.

And then a champion arose: a journalist by day, a crusader by night, indefatigable in his pursuit of justice, and merciless in his war on crime. His home base was one of the most corrupt cities in the nation...

Jean Carroll (01/07/11-01/01/10) – Standup comedienne and actress (TV’s The Jean Carroll Show, aka Take it from Me) who also penned scripts for the radio soap opera Our Gal Sunday.
Rory Markas (12/20/55-01/04/10) – Sportscaster who once worked at KNX-AM.
Bob Blackburn (1924-01/08/10) – One-time sportscaster for KOMO and KJR.
Jayne Walton Rosen (08/28/17-01/10/10) – Vocalist and “Champagne Lady” for Lawrence Welk and his orchestra.
Shirley Bell Cole (02/21/20-01/12/10) – Chicago-based actress who appeared as Little Orphan Annie (on the program of the same name) and Patsy Donovan on Captain Midnight.
Carl Smith (03/15/27-01/16/10) – Country music singer-songwriter who often appeared on The Grand Ole Opry and Cas Walker’s Radio Show.
George Jellinek (12/22/19-01/16/010) – Host of the syndicated radio series The Vocal Scene, a show produced at New York’s WQXR.
Jean Simmons (01/31/29-01/22/10) – Stage, screen and television actress who appeared on The Lux Radio Theatre and a 1949 syndicated broadcast of “A Christmas Carol”.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILLIAM BENDIX! William Bendix, beloved star of The Life of Riley radio series, was born on January 14, and Turner Classic Movies is presenting 10 of his movies this month including an 8 movie marathon on his birthday starting at 7:15 am.

Also airing on TCM of interest to radio fans is Red Skelton starring in “Whistling in the Dark” (1941) at 6 am on January 15, and Jack Benny and Carole Lombard in “To Be or Not to Be” (1942) at 12:30 pm on January 28. Jack Benny compatriot Eddie “Rochester” Anderson co-stars in “The Green Pastures” (1936) on January 17 at 6 am. All times are Eastern.
