Kyle gives his take on Starfox 3D for the Nintendo 3DS

Star Fox 64 3D is based on the 1997 N64 title Star Fox 64. I was able to play one level through a volcanic planet with flaming enemies and fireballs emerging from a a molten sea below. Everything that made the original title so fun was present. The smooth controls translated perfectly to the 3DS with the shoulder triggers controlling barrel rolls and the analog nub controlling the Arwing. I haven't played the game in a few years, but within minutes, I was dodging enemy fire and eventually taking down the end boss with ease. Another way to control the game was with the the 3DS's gyroscopic controls, and while they were not as accurate as the traditional game play mechanics, they still worked well enough for me to complete the level with no difficulty or issues.

The 3-D didn't really seem to affect game play that much, as switching back and forth between 2-D and 3-D didn't seem to make that much of a difference. The touch screen also seemed to have limited play as it was only used to answer calls from your teammates.

For a single-player impression, what I played was smooth and fun to play. It didn't take advantage of many 3DS features, but the core game play was just as good as it was years ago. For a Star Fox title, that's all that matters.
