Department store retailer bombs on price glitch

TargetYesterday, Target accidentally listed the PlayStation 360GB console at $39.99 on its website. This was reported on several websites, such as Nukezilla. I'm not spending any money right now, but this was too good to pass up. $40 for a PS3? The one console I don't own? Hell yes!

Speculation then followed across the web as to whether or not Target would simply cancel orders or actually uphold the accidental price. Unfortunately today, we got our answer - Target welched on the ordered PS3s and canceled orders:

Dear Target Guest,

We are contacting you regarding your order #601-6937257-8309840.  We recently became aware of mismatched price and product information which resulted in the discontinued Sony PS3 Hardware System and the PlayStation 3 Move Advanced Shooter Grip being displayed incorrectly on both Target.com and Amazon.com.

We are sorry, but we are unable to offer you either of these items at this time and have canceled your order.  Your credit card was not charged. We sincerely regret this inconvenience.

For more details on our pricing and cancellation policy please see Target.com:

Back in the day before the Internet and eCommerce, if retailers screwed up and actually sold you an item at the point-of-sale, that was it! Nowadays, retailers can just pull the rug out from under you and say, "Sorry Charlie, we fucked up, but you don't get to benefit from this!"

I'm aghast at Target on this one. Yes, someone screwed up, and this would have cost the company big bucks, but by screwing all of the people who tried to take advantage of their sorry asses, they may lose even more money in the long run. People like me that get pissed off aren't likely to go shop at Target any time soon. Target should have just eaten the cost and put on a big happy face. It would have been a great public relations move. Assholes!

that sucks dude! I remember there was a 360 controller mis priced for $19.99 at Best Buy back in the day and I was able to get it for that price. I guess it doesn't apply to online. (but it should)

I'm going to admit here, after the fact, that this obviously should have been more of a feature instead of news. We'll get this kind of thing corrected going forward here at OMGN. There's always room for improvement.
