Could a GTA movie be in the near future?

Following Ubi Soft's decision, Rockstar Games has made a trademark filing for Rockstar Films. The trademark was originally filed December 2010 and is currently going through the registration process. It will be officially recognized and registered on July 19.

The official statement for this branch of Rockstar describes the company making "animated motion picture films featuring entertainment, namely, action, adventure, dramatic, comedic, children's and documentary themes; pre-recorded video discs and other pre-recorded digital and electronic media in the field of live action programs, motion pictures, or animation featuring entertainment, namely, action, adventure, dramatic, comedic, children's and documentary themes."

While the children description seems a little off for normal Rockstar products, the other descriptions highlight Rockstar's catalog of games, including the Grand Theft Auto series, Read Dead Redemption, Bully, L.A. Noire, Midnight Club, and Max Payne (the latter already has a big screen adaptation).

This recent trademark filing also seems to match with the statements made by Rockstar head Dan Houser earlier this year. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Houser said video game movies are “awful,” and if there were to be any Rockstar property movies made, it would be made by Rockstar itself.

"We have explored a lot of movie deals, but we have just chosen not to make a movie. We love movies, but we also love games and that is what we remain focused on. If we were to attempt to make a movie, we would like to make it ourselves, or at least work in collaboration with the best talent, so at least if it is bad, we can know we failed on our own terms. But doing that takes time, and making games properly takes a lot of time. So, we may make movies one day, with the right property and the right partnership, but we have not found the time to do that yet,” Houser said.
