$169.99 will be the newest price for the 3DS starting Aug. 12

Nintendo's latest handheld is now the subject of a massive price drop courtesy of its maker. Starting Aug. 12, the 3DS will come with a new price of $169.99, a drastic decrease from the original $249 price point when the 3DS launched. Japan, Europe, and Australia will also receive price cuts similar to the United States.

For customers who bought the handheld before the Aug. 12 date, they will be able to download 20 free games from the 3DS e-shop. Ten NES Virtual Console games will be available along with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games which will be available at a later date. Some notable titles that will be available for download are The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Brothers for the NES Virtual Console and Metroid Fusion for the Game Boy Virtual Console.

“For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now,” says Reggie-Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America. “We're giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games.”

The price drop comes after a March 2012 earnings report stated that Nintendo had an 82 percent price drop and reported sluggish sales of the 3DS. This announcement also comes before the November release of the PS Vita, Sony's newest handheld console that shared the same price of the 3DS before the price drop.

I think the 20 free games is a good peace offering for the early adopters. Nintendo knows how to take care of its fanbase, unlike other companies... *cough* Capcom *cough*.

Still need more games to make it worth it. The best looking games are remakes of games I have played years ago.

At first I was annoyed about the price drop as I had bought one of the damn things for the Girlfriend not 3 DAYS before this was announced. Then things started looking up with the free classicx games pack which should make her happy.
