After countless announcements and promises, will Timesplitters 4 finally see the light of day?

Official PlayStation Magazine UK restores hope among fans of the Timesplitters (TS) series with a blurb in its "Rumour Machine" section:

Official Playstation Magazine UK hints at new entry to Timesplitters series.

2005's Timesplitters: Future Perfect was the last game of the series, released on PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube. The wacky, tongue-in-cheek narrative, fast-paced shooting and robust-for-its-time multiplayer gave Timesplitters a unique appeal. To this day, Timesplitters 2 is still the highest rated FPS on the PS2 on gameRankings.com.

As early as 2007, Free Radical, developer of the FPS series, gave its promises that a TS4 would be released someday. Ever since, there has been the occasional blip on the radar (including Crytek UK saying it would make a new announcement around E3 '11 time), but nothing concrete has been given to starving TS fans (they've even got a petition for TS4, with 18,000 signatures and counting).

Each entry of the Timesplitters franchise went out on a limb, providing the player with a steady barrage of genuine laughs, on a level that would rival Valve's sense of humor.

As much as I like having my first-person shooters feature parents being executed in front of their children or gruesome melee kills that leave the screen caked with blood, the enemy's pleas for mercy slowly turning to incoherent gurgling, some more light-hearted fare would be welcome (being able to hold more than two guns at a time would be cool, too). Here's hoping.

My God this would be great news if this was true. The Timesplitters was my absolute favorite series of shooter for console last generation. I think if they kept the same gameplay without falling to modern conventions, it would be fast paced and unique title among most modern console shooters.
